Abstraction

ABSTRACTION

By Sophie Wiseman

Approach

As I wanted to draw without using a fine liner after using colour, I used procreate to produce this piece. I started by drawing over the picture with large blocked areas of colour and gradually added smaller sections of colour. I tried to be selective with which colours I chose as the sections were large and so needed to resemble what that object was. For example one shade of grey that I picked had to be similar to the real photograph to represent a cloud, even with the unusual form I gave it with curvilinear shapes.

Findings

The final drawing still depicts the original image (Croome Court) but also, gives it a different style and ultimately a different atmosphere. With more defined boarders to each colour, the composition seems more crisp and untouched. Furthermore, the lighting is mor abrupt and accentuates the highlights quite intensely. The country house in the background still gives narrative the the drawing, however next time I attempt this method, I would add a focal point using the blocky approach, instead of drawing it in a simpler version.
