Yves Brunier
Born 10th November 1962 in Evian - Les - Bains
In 1982 he graduated in architecture and completed a diploma in landscape architecture 4 years later.
Very quickly his career took off and he was the assistant for Rem Koolhaas and worked on many landscape lead designs for Rotterdam, Amsterdam and the Hague. From then he focused on landscape architecture from being convinced by Rem Koolhaas.
With his career coming to an end just 5 years later, due to illness, he was still able to collaborate with many designers and made a name for himself in such as short space of time. Altogether he helped with 15 projects.

Design Process
Frequently, he described his ideas and concepts through collages and drawings. They are usually made in haste and to quickly characterise what he wanted to say with little explanation. Rem Koolhaas described his approach to be violent and impatient, perhaps because of his illness at the time, however the plants he included in his designs were carefully chosen and had purpose.
Through his experiments he explored the conflict between culture and nature, maybe explaining the sharp edges of the pictures he selected and the contrasting colours. I think that the multimedia approach allowed Burnier to immerse himself in what he was envisioning.

Rotterdam Museum Park - Review
The MVRDV's competition winning design has been released and is realised by the work of OMA and Yves Burnier's previous work.
The design includes a highly reflective building that contains restoration workshops, rooftop exhibition space, sculpture garden and a restaurant. The space will provide a unique experience for visitors.
In my opinion, the visualisation images have the same style of the collages Yves Burnier would make. There is a patchwork like quality to the images, especially the first one that features the bright blue sky. I think this could be due to the reflection of the building that is repeating the images in the photo, much alike how a collage repeats itself in layers. Also, the use of colour and pattern is similar to some of Burnier's work.
This design really does hone in on the effect Burnier wanted to create, a division but also harmony between culture and nature. Due to the type of building that is being created - one to showcase art - narratively, we see the interaction with people and the work that is produced to make us question our surroundings and environment, this is especially useful when considering the building itself has been planned to steer the people in a particular route to provoke feeling.
Finally, the unusual shape of the building reminds me of a bowl and could resemble the macrocosm of the visionaries in the world and how they inspire others to create in similar ways, linking to the theme of reflection; imitation is used to survive in nature and is useful in a modern world to for innovation.
