Design Project 01

 WEEK 03

THE PROCESS

DESIGN MOSAIC

The brief for this week was to produce an A1 sketch model of 'The Island' for design project 3, @1:1000. The brief was up to interpretation and the final product could be perceived as abstract or literal. My group used a literal interpretation of the project and refined the investigative project with naturalistic lines to mimic the atmosphere of each section.

Furthermore, we altered the scale of the site to represent the importance of features, and this was shown by how many times the objects were magnified in our representation. The buildings we featured in the model were considered to be the most critical points to display; the prison, factories, Gloucester Quays, the cathedral, power stations and the train stations. The buildings selected resembled the main points of interest, views, and political and social representations.

Firstly, when constructing the buildings I initially made them too short and so added stilts to exaggerate the height, allowing them to stand out from the flat paper. Moreover, I labelled each building to link the architecture to the labelled topography.

Above shows the main areas of the surrounding site and includes the busiest roads (red string), rural areas (green marker), urban areas (grid paper) and rivers (blue wool).

Overall the sketch model emphasised the urban fringe found around the site and the strict division between the commerce, education, and leisure side, and the opposing rural section willed with fields and protected areas.
